Autism assessments are undergirded by a neurodiversity-affirming approach that relies on ongoing interviews with the client, an interview with a family member, and questionnaire data to support findings (as recommended by Hartman et al. 2023). The aim of an assessment for autism spectrum disorder (hereafter, autism) is to gain an increased understanding of one’s social, emotional, and behavioural features and how they may align with the diagnostic criteria for autism.
Included below are the components of an autism assessment:
-
Consent for Assessment
-
Questionnaires (Self-Report and Other-Report)
-
Interviews (with Psychologist)
-
Formal Assessment (e.g., ADOS; optional)

Assessment will include several questionnaires that you will complete to explore your experiences of autism, other forms of neurodiversity, as well as wellness screening to rule out (or rule in) other contributing factors to your experience. I will also ask you about your experiences during an interview and interview someone who knew you well when you were younger to collect developmental information. The assessment also includes a report of the results of the assessment, any diagnoses made, as well as recommendations based on the outcome of the assessment.
